ORANGE, Va. (AP) - James Madison’s Montpelier is giving amateur archaeologists an opportunity to put their interest into practice.
The Orange attraction runs a dozen or more programs annually in which volunteers are paired with archaeologists to learn excavation techniques, laboratory analysis and the history of Montpelier.
This week, Montpelier is sponsoring a log cabin workshop. Participants are working with archaeologists and a team of carpenters to reconstruct a 19th century slave cable. It was discovered in a 2010 excavation.
The experience is intended to give visitors a sense of plantation life and the landscape during Madison’s era.
Montpelier is the lifelong home of Madison, the nation’s fourth president.
