MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Police officers in Marietta will be the first to carry the latest model of the Glock pistol.
Police Chief Dan Flynn told The Marietta Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/1jd3x7b ) that his department picked up 100 Glock Model 42 handguns from Glock’s Smyrna headquarters on Tuesday.
All of the department’s officers will get a new gun after they trade in their older-generation Glocks, Flynn said. The newer model from the Austrian-based gun manufacturer retails for between $599 and $734.
The department is paying for the new guns in part by trading in the older guns and through cash seized under the federal Asset Forfeiture Law, he said.
The officers will use the newest Glocks as their backup weapons while in the field and while off duty.
The Glock 42 operates the same as the officers’ primary weapon so the training will be a natural transition, said department spokesman David Baldwin.
“We try to do the trade-ins all at once. If you’re going to change anything with a weapons platform in your department, we prefer to do it all at once,” Baldwin said.
Training all of the officers should take about two weeks, he said.
The Glock 42 is the smallest and lightest of Glock’s current line of handguns and allows for easier concealment when the Glock 22 or Glock 27 may be too bulky or conspicuous, Baldwin said.
The Glock 42 is a good choice for the officers’ off-duty weapon, Baldwin said. Marietta police officers are encouraged to carry their weapons off duty in case they can help in an emergency situation, he said.
