LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas’ top cop is getting a national honor.
Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie is being named the Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriffs’ Association.
The announcement was made Tuesday, and Gillespie says he’s honored to be recognized.
Department officials point to a new Las Vegas police use-of-force policy, but Gillespie says it’s all due to the department’s nearly 5,000 police and civilian employees.
Gillespie has been a police officer for 33 years. He was elected sheriff in 2007, and isn’t seeking re-election in 2014.
Sheriffs’ Association official Fred Wilson says the group’s annual Ferris E. Lucas Award was established in 1995 to recognize outstanding contributions on local, state and national levels.
Gillespie will get the award at the association conference June 22 in Fort Worth, Texas.
