JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday took testimony on a constitutional amendment to allow state funds go to private schools.

Rep. Wes Keller, a Republican from Wasilla, is sponsor of House Joint Resolution 1.

He told the committee one of the goals of his bill was to remove from the constitution the anti-Catholic Blaine amendment, which forbids public funds from going to religious and private schools.

However, several people said during public testimony that state purpose was a mere diversion from the resolution’s true intent, ending the separation of church and state.

The committee will take up the bill again at a later date.
