WASHINGTON (AP) - The District of Columbia levied more than $180,000 in fines during the city’s first snow emergency in four years.
The Washington Times reports (https://bit.ly/1dMgSCk ) that the city towed 214 vehicles at a cost of $250 for illegal parking and $100 in tow fees, totaling $74,900. Officials say another 436 weren’t towed, but owners were fined $250, for a total of $109,000.
But the windfall isn’t expected to offset the cost of clearing roads during this winter’s storms and officials believe they have used up the $6.2 million snow-removal budget. Department of Public Works spokeswoman Linda Grant says the city has mobilized its snow-removal team more than 20 times this winter and gone through more than 35,000 tons of salt.
