ATLANTA (AP) - The City of Atlanta is working with Google to try bringing ultra-high speed internet access to the city.
Mayor Kasim Reed said Wednesday that the city is on a short list of municipalities working with Google to get access to the company’s fiber broadband network.
City officials say expanding and improving Atlanta’s internet access has been a priority for years. Officials say Google’s fiber broadband network is about 100 times faster than average broadband.
Reed says ultra-high speed internet will bolster the city’s economic development opportunities and help nurture its high-tech industries. Reed says Google Fiber could also help bridge the digital divide in some communities by offering access to more people.
Google will work with Reed’s office to explore what it would take to build the network in Atlanta.
