OUTGOING FSU HEAD APOLOGIZES TO TRUSTEES
Outgoing Florida State University President Eric Barron apologized on Wednesday to trustees for finding out through the media that he was in line to take the top job at Penn State University. Barron made his brief apology during an emergency meeting of FSU trustees who must now find someone to take over the school in the middle of a major fundraising campaign and the renewal of the school’s accreditation.
PASCO JAIL OPENS UNIT FOR MILITARY VETERANS
The Pasco County Jail has a new unit for military veterans. The section holds some 32 inmates and will offer a range of services, including counseling, rehabilitation, job placement, life skills and outreach programs.
TESTIMONY GIVES RARE DETAILS OF FLORIDA EXECUTIONS
During a recent hearing in a lawsuit involving a death row inmate scheduled to die by lethal injection, Assistant Florida Department of Corrections secretary Timothy Cannon gave testimony about how the state performs executions. Cannon’s testimony reveals the Department of Corrections added an additional “consciousness check” on inmates given a new cocktail of drugs following news media reports about the Oct. 15 execution of William Happ, and how that execution seemed to take longer than previous executions.
TEEN ACCUSED OF KILLING PARENTS ENTERS NO CONTEST PLEA
A Florida teenager accused of bludgeoning his parents and then throwing a party has entered no contest plea to two counts of first-degree murder. St. Lucie Circuit Court Judge Robert Makemson on Wednesday set a sentencing hearing for March 10.
MLB WITHDRAWS LAWSUIT AGAINST FLORIDA CLINIC
Major League Baseball has withdrawn its lawsuit against a defunct Florida anti-aging clinic at the center of the scandal involving use of banned substances by players, including New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
