HOPEWELL, Va. (AP) - A Hopewell street is being renamed in honor of a civil rights activist, the Rev. Curtis Harris.

The City Council has given its blessing to rename Terminal Street the Rev. C.W. Harris Street.

Besides being active in the civil rights movement, Harris was also a member of the city council for 26 years.

The Progress-Index (https://bit.ly/1f67hYS) reports that the council had also considered a proposal to include the name of Curtis’ late wife, Ruth, in renaming the street. Ruth Harris was an advocate of her husband’s activism. She died in May 2011.

The council, however, decided to stick with just one name.
