The Obama administration is mulling a plan to trade five imprisoned Taliban members for one U.S. soldier — Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who’s been detained by suspected members of the Haqqani network since 2009.
The sergeant was captured in Afghanistan and is believed to be held in Pakistan, The Washington Post reported.
The offer to trade Taliban members imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for Sgt. Bergdahl has been on the table for two-plus years. But now the Pentagon, the White House and the State Department has ratcheted up the offer and agreed to release five prisoners simultaneously, The Post reported.
So far, the offer hasn’t been formally extended, The Post said. But U.S. authorities say it’s time to bring Sgt. Bergdahl home.
“He’s been gone too long,” said Rear Adm. John Kirby in The Post report. “We want him back. We’ve never stopped trying to bring that about. He’s never far from anyone’s mind here.”
