CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - A South Texas physician indicted last fall in a $1.4 million health care billing scam has pleaded guilty and faces up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors in Corpus Christi say Dr. Roque Joel Ramirez of Robstown on Tuesday pleaded guilty to mail fraud.

He owned Health Resolutions Inc. Prosecutors say the 49-year-old physician’s office in Corpus Christi is now closed.

The indictment says Ramirez submitted nearly 5,000 false claims from 2008 to 2011 and billed for services that falsely added up to him working more than 24 hours per day. Investigators also said Ramirez submitted claims for patients who had died but the paperwork indicated the doctor continued to treat them.

Ramirez remains free on bond pending sentencing in May.
