BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania school board, which now includes four newly elected members, has voted 6-2 to void a four-year contract with its teachers’ union that was scheduled to take effect in July.
The teachers’ union in the Blackhawk School District says it will appeal Friday night’s vote to the state Labor Relations Board.
Blackhawk School District Solicitor John Petrush says case law suggests a lame-duck school board cannot bind an incoming board with a future contract.
All four new members of the school board, who were elected in November and took office in December, voted against the contract. Two other board members also voted to revoke it, two others supported the deal, and one board member was absent.
The contract was ratified 7-2 by the former board in September.
