CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - A northeast Iowa man has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a police officer before the officer shot him.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says (https://bit.ly/1fvlMAh) 27-year-old Zachary Church, of Parkersburg, pleaded not guilty to assaulting an officer and to possession of marijuana for sale. His trial is scheduled to begin on April 15 in Black Hawk County District Court.

Officer Bob Anderson has said he approached Church while Church was asleep behind the wheel of a running car on Dec. 25. Church is accused of suddenly attacking Anderson by punching him. Anderson says he felt himself losing consciousness and warned Church that he would shoot him if he didn’t stop. Anderson says he then shot Church, and responding officers helped detain him.
