A Kuwaiti man has come under some fire on social media for choosing to honor George H.W. Bush — the president who helped liberate Kuwait after the Iraq invasion of 1990 — by naming his son after the former leader.

Nayef al-Mutairi told a local station that during his wife’s pregnancy, he had names picked out for both a boy and girl — George Bush or Margaret Thatcher — Mediaite reported.

“This is the least I can do for his efforts to liberate Kuwait and save us,” he said of Mr. Bush.

Online posters aren’t so kind at his selection.

One Twitter user said: “A Kuwaiti named his son George Bush who killed one million Iraqis and destroyed Baghdad.” And another: “This is the top of mental backwardness.”

Mr. Al-Mutairi said his son isn’t bothered much and that the name actually helped when the father-son pair were pulled over for speeding during a visit to the United States, Mediaite reported.
