Former Rep. Melvin Jay Reynolds has been arrested in Zimbabwe on allegations he possessed pornographic material and violated immigration laws, an immigration official in the African country told The Associated Press.

Reynolds, a Democrat from Illinois, had to resign from Congress in 1995 after convictions for statutory rape, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography.

The Herald, a state-controlled newspaper in Zimbabwe, reported that Reynolds was arrested at a hotel in Harare, the capital city. It also reported that Reynolds had not yet paid $24,500 in hotel bills.

The AP quoted a U.S. embassy spokeswoman as saying she could not comment on the matter.
