ATLANTA (AP) - Democratic state Sen. Jason Carter says he wants Georgia to restore funding for bonuses to teachers who receive national board certification.
Carter, who is running for governor, unveiled his education proposals Tuesday. He says Republican leaders should support the bonuses, which cost an estimated $13 million annually before the program was stopped in lean budget years.
Other proposals include restoring incentives for pre-K teachers considered highly qualified and experienced and to forgive loans to college graduates with an education degree in exchange for a commitment to teach in public schools.
Carter also wants to increase funds the Georgia Lottery Corporation sets aside for education to a minimum of 30 percent. Carter says the lottery is only setting aside 25.5 percent, below the current target of 30 percent set by law.
