LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Prosecutors have dropped arson charges against one of the two boys charged with setting a fire that destroyed three apartments last spring in Maine’s second-largest city.
The Sun Journal (https://bit.ly/1kT5d8U ) reported Tuesday that the decision to dismiss the charges came after a judge dismissed the boy’s confessions.
He and another boy were 12 at the time of the fires in Lewiston. The other case was suspended after prosecutors couldn’t show that the defendant was competent to stand trial.
The judge dismissed a confession the boy made to police before he understood his right to remain silent, as well as a second confession to his mother.
The boy’s lawyer told the newspaper the dismissal of the charges is “a great result for a great kid.”
