ALGERIA, Algeria (AP) - Algeria’s president has insisted there are no divisions in the military following articles in the media indicating problems between the powerful intelligence agency and the army chief of staff.

In a statement read by a minister, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Tuesday condemned the “irresponsible behavior” in the “media war” against Algeria, the presidency, the army and the intelligence service.”

Algeria’s political scene was electrified earlier this month when the ruling party chief slammed the meddling of the intelligence services in politics. Soon other articles appeared with prominent figures linked to the intelligence services attacking allies of the president, including the army chief of staff.

Bouteflika, who has rarely appeared in public since suffering a stroke a year ago, has not said yet if he will seek re-election during April’s vote.
