VALLEY GRANDE, Ala. (AP) - A Facebook photo of hanging puppy led to a six-month jail sentence for a west Alabama man.

Andrew Parrish of Valley Grande pleaded guilty Tuesday in Selma to one count of animal cruelty. District Attorney Michael Jackson said the 23-year-old defendant will begin serving his six-month sentence this weekend and will spend 24 months on probation after finishing his sentence. He must also serve 100 hours of community service and can’t own an animal.

Jackson said an animal cruelty charge was dropped against Parrish’s fiancee, 26-year-old Caroline Dunnam, as part of a plea agreement that included Parrish taking sole responsibility for what happened.

The couple was arrested last month after a photo was posted on Facebook showing the black puppy hanging by its neck from the ceiling. The district attorney said the puppy made a full recovery and has a new home.

“Mistreating an animal is a horrible crime that will always demand severe punishment,” the district attorney said.
