EDUCATION: Graduated from Florida State University in 1973 with bachelor’s degree in geology, and received master’s (1976) and doctoral (1980) degrees in oceanography from the University of Miami.

CAREER: Became 14th president of Florida State University in February 2010. Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., from 2008-2009. Dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin from 2006-2008. Professor of geosciences, director of the Earth System Science Center, director of the EMS Environmental Institute and dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State from 1986-2006. Spent 1985-1986 as faculty member at the University of Miami. Scientist in the climate section of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., 1981-1985.

MISCELLANEOUS: A Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society and the Geological Society of America. Recipient of national awards as a scholar, researcher and lecturer. Served as panelist and adviser for National Science Foundation, the NASA and NOAA. Work and research has been part of more than 100 published papers
