NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Merritt C. Becker University of New Orleans Transportation Institute and the Port of New Orleans will partner for transportation research and workforce development projects targeting growth of the maritime industry.

Gary Lagrange, president of the state-run port, said the agreement will help promote economic development throughout the maritime community on the lower Mississippi River.

The port will provide facility space, personnel time, equipment and software.

The partnership will center on identifying best practices for liquefied natural gas bunkering; analyze the maritime industry’s progress on e-Navigation, a concept designed to bring about increased safety and security in commercial shipping through exchange of data; holding a workforce summit for high school and college students on maritime careers; developing a web-based maritime curriculum for students younger than college; and working to establish a seminar for women in the transportation business.

The Transportation Institute focuses on the role of transportation in sustainable development. It is directed by UNO associate professor John Renne.
