FREMONT, Ohio (AP) - A longtime Republican in the Ohio House has withdrawn from seeking re-election because he failed to sign his paperwork enough times.

State Rep. Rex Damschroder of Fremont in northwestern Ohio says he’s now checking to see if he can run as a write-in candidate for the seat.

Damschroder took his name off the ballot this past week after discovering that he failed to sign his declaration of candidacy the required number of times.

He acknowledged that it was his mistake.

Damschroder was expected to win again in this year’s election with no other candidates running against him.

He was first elected as a state representative from 1995 to 2003 before stepping down because of term limits. He then won a spot in the Ohio House again in 2010 and 2012.
