Mich. lawmaker mistakenly took property tax break

DETROIT (AP) - A Michigan lawmaker says she and her husband mistakenly took a property tax break on a rental property they own in suburban Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press reports (https://on.freep.com/1gU5lj8 ) Monday that Democratic state Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Detroit and her husband claimed a 100 percent personal residence exemption since 2008 for both the Detroit home they live in and a Dearborn rental property.

Only the Detroit home was eligible for the homestead exemption, which reduces school taxes.

Tlaib, who is running for state Senate, says it was an “honest mistake” and she’s embarrassed the she didn’t catch the error. Tlaib says she will pay the taxes she wasn’t assessed, which could amount to more than $1,000 with interest and penalties.

Tlaib said she’s contacted officials to correct the information.
