BEND, Ore. (AP) - About 400 people attended a memorial service for a Bend high school student who killed himself in a modular classroom in early February.

Zachary Leyes shot himself Feb. 7 in an American Sign Language classroom. The school was locked down for two hours. No one else was injured.

The Bend Bulletin reported (https://bit.ly/1gNHYcq ) at the memorial on Sunday night, the 17-year-old’s sister, Abigail, said she turned off her phone before class and only learned of Leyes’ suicide after the lockdown ended.

She found a text message from Zachary that said he was sorry, but was not coming home.

Daniel and Leanna Leyes, his parents, have also set up a scholarship through the Central Oregon Community College Foundation for Bend students looking to study applied arts, such as woodworking.
