KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) - The Norwegian cross-country skier whose brother died on the eve of the Sochi Olympics has traveled back to Norway and will skip the remaining events.
The Norwegian team says Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen didn’t want to stay another week to compete in Saturday’s 30-kilometer freestyle race. She was not selected to compete in Wednesday’s team sprint.
Jacobsen’s brother Sten Anders died on Feb. 7, but she stayed in Sochi and competed in three races. She finished fourth in the individual sprint, 19th in the 10K classical, and was part of the relay team that surprisingly only came fifth on Saturday.
Norway was reprimanded by the International Olympic Committee after its four skiers wore black armbands in honor of Sten Anders Jacobsen in the opening skiathlon race on Feb. 8.
