GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - When snow and freezing rain prompted the closure of schools throughout the state, students in Gainesville kept up with their assignments online.

Gainesville schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer told the Times of Gainesville (https://bit.ly/1f3M4yI ) that students were able to get assignments from their teachers’ web pages and turn their work in via email.

Kacie Landers, a teacher and parent, said she hopes students can continue working from home on days schools are closed.

“Normally when we’re out of school for the weather, I would make her read or I’ll make up some random math problems,” Landers said of her daughter, a second grade student. “So this time, I actually spoke with her teacher. She sent an email and called to make sure I got it. And she gave some specific assignments that she wanted Lottie to work on at home.”

Students in Gainesville and Hall County have missed eight days of school because of bad weather. Working from home doesn’t equate to making up missed class time and students in both Hall County and Gainesville are scheduled to be in class Monday, which was supposed to be a day off.

Gainesville’s school board will also consider adding March 17 and April 4 as makeup days, Dyer said.
