ROCKINGHAM, Vt. (AP) - A Bellows Falls-based community radio station is off the air temporarily while finalizing an expansion and waiting for a new federal license that would allow it to increase its coverage by almost four times.
Great Falls Community Broadcasting Company, WOOL-FM, or Black Sheep Radio, went off the air Tuesday to allow technical work and testing to its updated equipment while it waits for word on whether the Federal Communications Commission would approve its new license.
“Now it’s all about the FCC and their examination of our documentation and their eventual granting of the license; it’s really all in their hands and we believe we’ve done everything to the letter so we have every confidence they will grant us the license,” director Gary Smith told the Eagle Times of Claremont. “We have to wait for the FCC to approve our license, it’s been submitted (and) obviously it’s been a long process.”
If approved, the expansion would increase the station’s listening audience from 35,000 to roughly 135,000, from White River Junction to Greenfield, Mass.
Although the station’s broadcast signal is off the air, listeners can still stream programming over the web at www.wool.fm.
“It seems to me that everyone shares the excitement in the possibility of doing a publicly-owned, community resource at such a scale. Everyone I talk to seems really excited,” Smith said.
