SOCHI, Russia (AP) - Switzerland is chasing Germany in the Sochi Games medal count using a similar philosophy: When you medal, make sure it’s a gold.
Switzerland picked up two golds and a silver in six medal competitions Friday to be the biggest medal mover of the day. Right behind it was Belarus, which won two golds and a bronze.
Five of Switzerland’s seven medals through 44 events are gold. Sandro Viletta won the men’s super-combined alpine ski event on Friday, while Dario Cologna won the men’s 15 kilometer classic cross-country race.
Other tidbits from Friday’s title competitions:
- Croatia and Kazakhstan won their first medals, with Croatia taking a silver in men’s super-combined slalom skiing and Kazakhstan winning bronze in men’s figure skating.
- Norway was kept off the podium for just the second time in seven days medals were awarded.
- Finland - ninth in the historical Winter Olympics medal count going into Sochi - is on the biggest cold streak of any country that’s won a medal here. It has been shut out for five days since winning a silver in the women’s snowboard slopestyle on the second day of competition.
Seven golds are expected Saturday including: women’s super-G alpine skiing, women’s 4 by 5-kilometer relay cross country, women’s 1,500-meter short track speedskating, men’s 1,000-meter short track speedskating, men’s 1,500M speedskating, men’s skeleton and men’s large hill ski jumping.
