PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Historical Society says it’s cutting down another elm tree on the grounds of the historic John Brown House Museum.
The group says the elm is dead and has lost bark and some major branches. It says the Providence city forester and experts from Brown University agree the tree poses a safety hazard. It’s likely to be cut down next month.
It will be the second elm cut down on the museum’s grounds since last year, when a 108-year-old elm was found to have a deadly canker infection.
The group says the second tree was tested for the canker and for Dutch Elm disease, and tests were negative.
The John Brown House was the 18th-century home of John Brown, a slave trader and major benefactor of Brown University.
