CENTREVILLE, La. (AP) - Three children and an adult died Saturday when their sports utility vehicle collided head-on with Lafayette Parish school bus in St. Mary Parish.
A fifth person in the vehicle was taken by helicopter to a local hospital with unknown injuries.
State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons said Saturday that two children, ages 6 and 7, along with a 16-year-old and a 36-year-old adult were ejected from the SUV and pronounced death at the scene.
Hammons said a 17-year-old male, also in the SUV, was airlifted to the hospital and is listed in serious condition.
Hammons said the collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 90 and Louisiana Highway 317 when a tire blew out on the SUV. He said the SUV crossed the median and collided with the bus.
The victims have not been identified.
Hammons said there were 30 students and five adults on the bus.
Lafayette High School Principal Patrick Leonard says the bus carrying the school’s baseball team, who was on its way to a scrimmage. Coaches were also aboard the bus.
Leonard said some players on the bus were hurt but their injuries were minor.
State police are investigating the accident.
