LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A University of Nebraska Board of Regents committee is studying the qualifications of 11 search firms that are interested in finding a replacement for President J.B. Milliken, who is leaving for a new job.

University officials mailed letters to 13 executive search firms across the country on Jan. 28, the Lincoln Journal Star reported Saturday (https://bit.ly/1hlEuB8 ).

NU spokeswoman Melissa Lee said 11 responded by the Wednesday deadline.

The Board of Regents is not required to complete a competitive bidding process to hire a search firm, so the board’s executive committee will narrow the 11 to a short list of firms to be interviewed by the board. The executive committee includes Regents Board Chairman Howard Hawks, Vice Chairman Bob Phares and members Tim Clare and Rob Schafer.

When the firms are narrowed to four, their identities will become public record.

NU hopes to have a search firm hired by the end of the month.

The Board of Regents will also examine forming a presidential advisory search committee to help the board in hiring a new president.

Milliken was chosen last month as the new chancellor for the City University of New York, the nation’s third-largest university system. Milliken will assume the new position June 1.
