An effort by Planned Parenthood to link Valentine’s Day to women’s health care has irritated pro-life leaders, as a heart-shaped greeting included breast exams and “safe & legal abortion” as something women need.

The video posted on Twitter has Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards smiling and holding a number of red and white placards, tagged #WhatWomenNeed and “For Valentine’s Day.”

Each placard carries a needed service - “Birth Control,” “Cancer Screenings,” “Maternity Care” — within a heart.

The placard that said “Safe & Legal Abortion” sparked the outrage.

“On Valentine’s Day, most people think of chocolate or flowers as a romantic gift,” said Keith Mason, founder of Personhood USA. But not Planned Parenthood’s Ms. Richards, he fumed. “She took to social media yesterday to advertise abortion for Valentine’s Day.”

Lila Rose, president of Live Action, was also astonished that the “antithesis of love” would be listed as a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

“Having infamously earned the title of America’s largest abortion corporation, killing over 327,000 children a year, they will stoop to any low to push a vicious ideology and make a buck,” said Ms. Rose.

Many of Planned Parenthood’s allies jumped in on the #WhatWomenNeed hashtag for Valentines day.

#WhatWomenNeed is #equalpay and #paidleave, so they don’t have to choose between their jobs and their families,” wrote Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Florida Democrat and chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden posted a photo on Twitter of him hold a heart-shaped placard stating women need “access to quality health care.”
