Multiple accidents along the eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike caused a massive pileup Friday, and emergency responders are still trying to sort out what happened.
NBC estimates between 50 and 100 vehicles were involved. ABC initially reported up to 20 vehicles collided at one accident site. At least two people have been hospitalized, NBC reported.
At one crash site, at least 16 cars and SUVs slid into a pile behind two big rigs, while a van reportedly overturned and a tractor-trailer jackknifed, according to NBC.
“We just started seeing a lot of minor accidents, a lot of cars trying to brake but they couldn’t brake in time,” said one reporter from SkyForce10 who responded to the scene.
Another crash site involved two tractor-trailers, a FedEx truck and several other vehicles. Ultimately, traffic came to a standstill on the highway.
Pennsylvania State Police said drivers were likely traveling too fast for the wintery and slippery conditions.
