RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina’s attorney general is advising people to make sure they’re not paying too much for towing in the winter storm.

Attorney General Roy Cooper said Friday in a news release that more than a dozen consumers have called his office to report being charged too much for towing. He says some are reporting charges of $400 or more when normal towing rates are typically $100 to $150.

Cooper reminds consumers and towing companies that North Carolina’ s price-gouging law is in effect because a state of emergency was declared Tuesday. In addition, a state law against unfair and deceptive trade practices is always in effect.

He says people who believe they’re being overcharged for towing should file a complaint with the office’s Consumer Protection Division.
