SAN DIEGO (AP) - Democratic City Councilman David Alvarez, who lost the San Diego mayor’s election this week to Republican Kevin Faulconer, has been fined $2,000 for violations earlier in the campaign.
U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1c7GyIs ) reports Friday that the city’s Ethics Commission issued the fine in a unanimous decision Thursday, two days after the election.
The fines stem from two sets of Alvarez mailers sent before November’s general election where the printed “paid for by” disclosures didn’t follow city laws on clarity.
They were produced and sent to residents by consultant Mission Control Inc., which acknowledged its error during the investigation and will pay $1,500 of the fine while Alvarez pays the remaining $500.
Alvarez’s campaign said in a statement that “we worked productively with the Ethics Commission and the issue is resolved.”
