The Archdiocese of Milwaukee says that its bankruptcy reorganization — the fallout of sexual abuse claims — will cost upwards of $19 million, but only a fraction of that is aimed at settling directly with victims.
The vast majority — $6.9 million — has already gone toward attorneys, The Associated Press reported.
The final reorganization plan calls for $4 million to be spread among the 125 or so victims of clergy sex abuse who have filed suits, and a total of $12.5 million to pay creditors’ attorney costs, AP said.
Creditors do include hundreds of abuse victims, AP reported.
But the $4 million to be distributed among 125 victims figures into the smallest per-victim payment that’s been offered by the 11 dioceses that have sought bankruptcy protections in the past ten years, AP said.
The financial details were released late Wednesday during a bankruptcy court hearing.
