Vice President Joseph R. Biden and his wife, Jill, will travel to Chile next month to attend the inauguration of that country’s next president, the White House announced Thursday.
Socialist Michelle Bachelet — who, like President Obama and Mr. Biden, has focused much of her attention on the income gap between the rich and poor — was elected Chile’s leader for the second time in December. She previously served as president from 2006 to 2010.
The White House said Mr. Biden will lead a U.S. delegation to the ceremony but did not name other American officials who will attend.
Also during the second week of March, Mr. and Mrs. Biden also will travel to the Dominican Republic and meet with that country’s president, Danilo Medina, “to discuss a broad range of bilateral issues, as well as regional cooperation,” the White House said.
