BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man who pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing an historical document from the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington and trying to sell it has failed to appear in court on new charges.
The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1bW6t5X) an arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for 55-year-old Patrick Rooney of Colchester after he failed to appear for an arraignment on charges including possession and selling of stolen property, namely the “Chittenden County Road Commissioners 1828-1831” manuscript. It was sold for $625 to the University of Vermont’s Bailey/Howe Library.
Last month, Rooney pleaded not guilty to petty larceny for taking a page from “The Proprietors Volume” from Burlington’s Fletcher Free Library and attempting to sell it to the Bailey/Howe Library. The document was written in 1791.
