San Diego voters chose Republican Kevin Faulconer over Democrat David Alvarez to replace disgraced former Mayor Bob Filner.
Just before midnight, Mr. Alvarez conceded in a tweet reported by NBC: “I want to congratulate Kevin Faulconer. It’s clear that he will be the next mayor of San Diego. I look forward to working with him.”
Mr. Faulconer won 54.6 percent of the votes.
The winning candidate said, during a last-minute speech while votes were still being counted, that his leadership would bring San Diegans together, and his administration would “invest where we need the help,” NBC reported.
The special election was held to replace Mr. Filner, who resigned from his office in disgrace in August on the heels of a slew of sexual harassment accusations. Mr. Filner was later sentenced to house arrest for felony false imprisonment and for two misdemeanor charges of battery against three different women, NBC said.
