RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - An independent political committee has bought air time for a commercial criticizing Thom Tillis in his bid for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate from North Carolina.

A spokesman for Patriot Majority USA said Wednesday the group paid $500,000 for the commercial that will run into next week on cable and over-the-air channels statewide. The group is formed in a way so that donors don’t have to be disclosed.

The commercial alleges Tillis supports changes that would deny health insurance to those with pre-existing conditions and raise prescription drug costs for older adults. The group says they’re linked to Tillis’ desire to repeal the federal health care law.

Americans for Prosperity is a similar independent group that’s spent several million dollars on ads targeting Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.
