BANGOR, Wash. (AP) - State and federal officials are working to contain an estimated 2,000 gallons of oily bilge water that spilled from the Navy’s base at Bangor late Monday.
Naval Base Kitsap spokesman Tom Danaher says the spill occurred after oily bilge water was pumped from a ship to a tank. That tank malfunctioned, and a mixture of oil and water overflowed onto the pier and into the water.
The navy initially estimated about 150 gallons spilled but now says better estimates put it at 2,000 gallons.
KING reports (https://bit.ly/1eqKtwD ) the Navy used skimmers and booms to absorb the oily water, but the oily sheen could still be seen Tuesday.
The Navy is coordinating with U.S. Coast Guard and the state Department of Ecology to contain and clean up the spill.
State health officials are advising people not to harvest or eat shellfish form that area until further notice.
