HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - State Treasurer Rob McCord’s gubernatorial campaign picked up an endorsement Wednesday from Pennsylvania’s largest teachers’ union, the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
McCord also boasts endorsements by several other big unions, including the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776, the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters and AFSCME Council 13, the largest state employees union.
Some unions haven’t endorsed yet, nor has the AFL-CIO labor federation. Unions are typically an important source of campaign money and volunteers, particularly for Democrats.
McCord is vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Tom Corbett in the Nov. 4 election. The primary election is May 20 and six others, including U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, York businessman Tom Wolf, plan to seek the Democrats’ nomination.
Schwartz’s endorsers include Philadelphia’s International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98, the Pittsburgh Federation of Teacher and the Pennsylvania State Council of Sheet Metal Workers.
Former state environmental protection chief Katie McGinty has been endorsed by Local 85 of the Amalgamated Transit Workers in Pittsburgh. Wolf is backed by the IBEW local in his home city of York.
