LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Las Vegas-area family court judge is appealing a three-month unpaid suspension handed down after he presided over cases handled by a prosecutor he was dating.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1m9DwKC ) Family Court Judge Steven Jones mailed his notice of appeal to the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline on Tuesday.

The commission issued the suspension last week, saying it factored Judge Steven Jones’ more than 20 years of “otherwise exemplary work” in its decision.

Jones had been suspended from the bench with pay following his indictment in October 2012 on federal criminal fraud charges. His trial in that case is scheduled in March.

The discipline commission found in December that Jones failed to recuse himself from cases handled in his courtroom by his late girlfriend, Lisa Ann Willardson.
