ATLANTA (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of Georgians have lost electricity in a storm that dumped snow and freezing rain on a large swath of the state.
Officials from Georgia Power and the Georgia Electric Membership Corp. said 230,260 customers were without power Wednesday night. Earlier in the day, utility officials reported that about 200,000 people had lost service.
Utility crews were able to restore power to thousands of Georgians after the first wave of ice rolled through the state Wednesday morning. GEMC spokeswoman, Terri Statham, said service had been restored to about 71,000 customers earlier in the day.
The numbers have been fluctuating as crews restored power and new outages were reported, but they showed a downward trend early Wednesday afternoon after rising dramatically during the morning.
