CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - A federal judge is considering a request from the Department of Justice to postpone a trial on the state’s voter ID law until after the November election.
But one attorney said Wednesday following a hearing in Corpus Christi that Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos appeared hesitant to push back the Sept. 2 trial. A decision could come later this week.
Jose Garza represents the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, which is among several groups suing the state over requiring voters to present photo identification at the polls. Garza wants to keep the September start in hopes of blocking the law in time for the November election.
The Justice Department argues that more time is needed to prepare for trial.
The voter ID law remains in place for the March 4 primary.
