TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has named Kevin Steele linebackers coach and put defensive coordinator Kirby Smart back in charge of the secondary.

Steele had been the Crimson Tide’s director of player personnel but is returning to the field. He will coach inside linebackers like he did in 2007-08, when Smart worked with the secondary.

Secondary coach Greg Brown left for Louisville. Steele will also be special assistant to head coach Nick Saban.

Saban says Steele will “be able to jump right in and not miss a beat.”

Steele, a former Baylor head coach, was defensive coordinator at Clemson from 2009-11. He’s also had stints with Florida State, Nebraska, Tennessee and the NFL’s Carolina Panthers among others.

Saban’s new defensive line coach Bo Davis was also on the 2007 staff.
