AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Two Maine troopers say their family’s finances are suffering as the result of freezes in pay increases last year.
The troopers were among dozens of state workers urging lawmakers on the Appropriations Committee on Monday to restore $6 million in the state budget for merit and longevity pay increases.
The Sun Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1g2GThd ) that one of the troopers told the committee his family can’t afford to buy enough heating oil to keep his house warm and that he had to sell his wife’s engagement ring and other personal items to get by.
Another trooper said he hunts and has resorted to collecting road kill on the highway to feed his family.
No one testified against the measure. It faces a vote in committee before heading to the full chamber.
