Sen. Claire McCaskill, Missouri Democrat, said Monday that she feels good about Democrats’ chances of succeeding in the midterm elections this year, despite some Democratic senators up for re-election in primarily red states like Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina.
“There’s problems on the Republican side. They’ve got some really nasty primaries out there,” she said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe. “So I feel good about November.”
She said she probably wouldn’t invite President Obama to campaign with her if she was running in a conservative state and acknowledged that the president’s low approval numbers are a challenge for those senators.
“But that doesn’t mean that you can’t win. These candidates in those states are strong candidates,” she said. “They know how to stay on offense and talk about the Republicans shutting down the government.”
Mrs. McCaskill went on to talk about 2016 and said there is no one better to handle the stress of a presidential campaign, as well as the policy and political problems facing the country, than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“I feel great about campaigning for her, I think she’s going to be a terrific president,” she said.
