LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) - A court has denied the appeal of a central Pennsylvania man who is behind bars for a stabbing death in 2009.

The Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era (https://bit.ly/1fWVEQk) said Tuesday the state Superior Court ruled that the appeal filed by 30-year-old Sequoyah Hawkins has no merit.

In 2012, Hawkins was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and given an 8- to 20-year sentence for the killing of 20-year-old Chrishon Johnson-Gray in Lancaster.

Hawkins testified during trial that he acted in self-defense after being punched. His appeal stated that some evidence was mishandled at trial and other evidence should have been presented but wasn’t.

The higher court denied all arguments and affirmed the jury’s decision.
