HAGATNA, Guam (AP) - Guam’s delegate to Congress says the Navy will soon base a fourth submarine in the U.S. territory.

Del. Madeleine Bordallo said in a statement Tuesday increasing the number of submarines will add to the Navy’s capabilities when responding to contingencies in the region.

The USS Topeka is a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine. It joins the USS Chicago, the USS Key West, and the USS Oklahoma City already based in Guam.

Bordallo says the Navy’s decision is another clear example of Guam’s strategic location in the Asia-Pacific region.

The USS Topeka has a crew of 173, including 13 officers and 157 enlisted sailors.
