DALLAS (AP) - The investigation of an embattled University of Texas System regent cost the state $400,000 in legal bills in 2013.

The Dallas Morning News reports (https://bit.ly/LT5SrA) the totals come from records filed with the Texas Legislative Council.

Houston lawyer Rusty Hardin and his team billed just over $200,000 for work from August through October 2013 for the House committee investigating regent Wallace Hall. They spent $500 at an upscale Austin restaurant with two people labeled “witness” and “Chief of Staff” and stayed two nights at an Austin hotel for about $800 per person.

The UT System’s legal team, led by Philip Hilder, billed almost $200,000 from September through November 2013.

Hall is accused of misusing his office in an attempt to oust UT Austin President Bill Powers.
